11-year high for railway passengers in Wales

The railways in Wales has seen the largest year on year percentage increase in passengers for over a decade, with 57.4 million using the railways.

Figures released by the Welsh government have revealed a 9.4% increase in the number of station entries and exits in 2018-19 – compared with the previous year. This is the largest since 2007-08.

Most of the largest increases occurred in South East Wales, especially on the City Line in Cardiff, as well as stations on the Valleys Line close to or in Cardiff.

The report has found that the number of station entries and exits in Wales has risen every year since 2004-05 and by 75% over that period.

Cardiff Central was the busiest station in Wales with 25% of all station entries/exits.
