£500k of improvements to car parks at North West railway stations

Passengers in the North West who drive to 13 stations to catch the train will soon see improvements to car parks.

Network Rail has allocated half a million pounds to improve car park facilities at 13 Northern stations.

All 13 station car parks will be resurfaced and some will have improvements made to approach roads and drainage. The work will mean better facilities for passengers and provide a boost to local firms which will be sub-contracted to work on the improvements.

Rory Kingdon, senior sponsor at Network Rail, said: “We’re pleased to have this opportunity to provide upgrades for passengers using these 13 stations.

“When passengers are able to return to the rail network to travel more freely, these car park improvements will help improve the start and end of their journeys.”

The rail industry is taking advantage of quieter train stations and car parks to carry out the work which will cause less disruption to passengers. Train services will not be affected by the upgrades which will be completed in the autumn.

Chris Jackson, regional director at Northern, said: “This investment is another example of the work being done by the rail industry to improve the journey experience of passengers. It will transform our stations’ car parks and make a significant difference to our customers.

“There may be some disruption whilst the work is carried out and I’d like to thank our customers in advance for their patience and understanding.”

The stations selected for improvements are:
• Disley, Holmes Chapel, Prestbury and Styal in Cheshire East;
• Greenbank in Cheshire West and Cheshire;
• Dove Holes and New Mills Newtown in High Peak;
• Castleton in Rochdale;
• Reddish North, Gatley and Strines in Stockport;
• and Hyde North and Newton for Hyde in Tameside.

All stations listed above are set to undergo car park resurfacing. Repairs will also be undertaken to the approach roads at Hyde North and Reddish North. Drainage work will be undertaken at New Mills Newtown to remove water ponding risks. The disabled parking bays will be resurfaced at Castleton. Work will be undertaken up to a total budget of £500k.

Meanwhile, passengers should continue following Government guidelines around the use of public transport, and only travel if they have to.
