KHES Completes Sandwich Station Mechanical & Electrical Design Works in Preparation for The 149th Open

KH Engineering Services Limited (KHES), a part of M Group Services, has completed an extensive programme of mechanical and electrical design works for two new platform extensions at Sandwich station on the Kent Coast line.

The two 80-metre platform extensions at the ‘Dover end’ of the station will enhance passenger capacity and ensure the station is equipped to accommodate the 12-carriage trains that will operate during The 149th Open taking place at Royal St George’s Golf Club in Sandwich in July 2021.

KHES delivered the supporting electrical services on behalf of principal contractor BAM Nuttall for Network Rail, on behalf of ultimate client Dover District Council, in partnership with Kent County Council and golf’s governing body, and organiser of The Open Championship, The R&A.

The scope of works included:

  • Provision of new main switchgear within the new feeder pillar to Platform 1
  • Installation of new distribution boards
  • Sub-main cabling from existing to new low-voltage (LV) distribution systems and installation of a new Cable Management System (CMS)
  • Final circuit wiring and modification of existing wiring
  • Installation of new lighting and emergency lighting (and removal of previous system), as well as a new walkway and column lighting to the platform extension, and new LED handrails to the new footbridge
  • Earthing and bonding removal and installation
  • Lightning Protection
  • Inspection, testing and commissioning

Delivering improvements to the station that would ensure the safe movement of passengers traveling to and from The Open was a key priority, and the KHES project team collaborated closely with Kent County Council to achieve this. This included the installation of a new protected walkway with column lighting that runs from the extension on Platform 1, providing spectators with a segregated and more direct route to and from Royal St George’s Golf Club which avoids local roads and streets.

KHES Project Manager, Tony Mace, commented: “The project was delivered in line with the scheduled completion date, with innovative solutions implemented to protect the station’s heritage status and to minimise disruption to the surrounding community. The design and use of electrical innovation has also allowed for the new installation to be remotely controlled, eliminating possible disruption to passengers; preserving the original exterior of the station; reducing energy costs; and controlling lighting levels in consideration of the local community.”

Darren Bates, Managing Director at KHES, commented: “We are delighted with the response to our works at Sandwich station. The Open is a landmark event in the sporting calendar and will be really important for this area of Kent, so it’s a pleasure knowing that our contribution to this project will make hosting the day slightly easier for them.”

This work was delivered by Network Rail’s Southern Capital Delivery team in conjunction with BAM Nuttall as Principal Contractor. In this instance, KHES was sub-contracted by BAM Nuttall to provide the supporting electrical services, i.e. the lighting on the platforms/footbridge and walkway.
