New figures have revealed almost 4,000 people were fined in less than 12 months when travelling across London’s network for not wearing mandatory face coverings.
The rule to do so was in place until 24 February 2022, and the figures go back to 24 February the previous year.
Up to 27 January 2022 — the last date that Transport for London (TfL) recorded face mask wearing compliance — 3,996 people were given a fixed penalty notice of £200. If they paid within 14 days, the penalty was reduced to £100.

TfL prevented 7,283 people from travelling and directed 2,325 people to leave the network during this time.
Currently, overall, there are 710 penalty notices that remain unpaid. TfL can take action where fixed penalty notices remain. So far 538 are being pursued by prosecution, the remaining await prosecution.
The outstanding value of the fines is estimated at £142,000.
London Assembly member Krupesh Hirani, from the Labour Group, asked for the figures from the mayor. He said: “We should be grateful to all transport workers who were on the frontline of keeping the capital moving and keeping Londoners safe during the height of the pandemic.
“These new figures show that TfL took enforcement action to boost compliance and that hundreds of fines are still being chased up.
“Face coverings are no longer compulsory on the TfL network, but I would still encourage Londoners to wear one where they can to protect themselves and others.
“The latest figures show that still under half of all eligible adults in the capital have received their booster jab, so I am also urging Londoners to take every dose of the vaccine available to them”.
