Industry-first sustainable train washing solution nearly ready for testing

The partnership between innovative train washing system provider The Orange Train Wash and Dura Composites has already yielded positive results, with a flagship machine nearing completion and due to be tested shortly.

Orange Train Wash founder Martin Whitbread developed his chemical-free washing system over the course of several years, partnering with Dura in June 2022. The leading composite product designer and manufacturer is providing a sustainable substructure and walkway system for Martin’s machine, which recycles and reuses deionised water to clean trains more sustainably. Dura will support The Orange Train Wash as it showcases its revolutionary solution to train operating companies worldwide.

The partners have also collaborated with depot and workshop designers, developing the system so that can be uninstalled and redeployed in different locations, rather than discarded after use.

Martin commented: “It’s an exciting time for The Orange Train Wash, and our partnership with Dura is bearing fruit. We’re delighted to have achieved our goal of developing a train washing system that can be moved between locations. It means that train operators won’t need to write off their initial investment, instead making significant cost-savings.”

Coupled with its reduced footprint and water-saving functionality, this feature makes the train wash a truly game-changing innovation. The industry has responded positively, with Martin and his team receiving two invitations to meet decision-makers at InnoTrans in Berlin. At present, they are in active discussions with train operating companies in 11 countries.

Newly-appointed non-executive chairman Stephen Collicot will help The Orange Train Wash to roll out its innovation, drawing on years of industry experience – most recently, as technical director of RBDA.

“I’m thrilled to announce that Stephen has accepted the offer to become non-executive chairman of The Orange Train Wash. His valuable experience and knowledge will ensure that we deliver a truly transformative cleaning solution to depots everywhere,” Martin added.

The Orange Train Wash offers a ground-breaking alternative to traditional train washing equipment. Its 3m x 1m system uses recycled, deionised water to clean trains, completing an eight-car set in under four minutes.
