Leeds Station is the centre of the action as Leeds Poppy Day get underway

Leeds station is the place to be on Tuesday 1 November, as the station supports the Royal British Legion’s City Poppy Day by hosting a team of volunteer fundraisers, and live performances from the British Army Band Catterick.

Volunteers will be collecting donations from passengers and visitors to the station, in order to raise as much money as they can to contribute to the Poppy Appeal, which every year raises millions to help support veterans who have served in the armed forces.

The British Army Band Catterick will be adding a little swing to the daily commute, performing uplifting live music on the south concourse, while the station’s iconic dark arches will be lit red to show support to the Armed Forces Community.

The Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal launched on Thursday 27 October, with collectors distributing poppies across the UK. City Poppy Days – involving uniformed personnel from the Royal Navy, British Army, Royal Air Force, veterans and supporters – are taking place in cities up and down the country including London (3 November), Cardiff (29 October), Manchester (5 November), Bristol (5 November), Birmingham (8 November) and Leeds.

The RMT moved the planned first day of their strike from the 3 November so as not to clash with the London poppy day, which raises around £1 million for the campaign.

The rail industry is coming together to give further support by allowing free travel for volunteers and collectors to participate in City Poppy Days across Great Britain.
