Urbis Schréder provides smart lighting at new Woolwich railway station

Urbis Schréder has discussed its role in the delivery of Woolwich railway station, which opened in May 2022 as part of the ground-breaking Elizabeth Line.

The smart lighting specialist supplied multiple polyester powder coated black SHUFFLE columns, which illuminate the forefront of Crossrail-built Woolwich station. Fitted with 360 and 180 camera modules, these innovative wireless units enable passengers to travel safely and easily.

It also relit two approach roads, guiding people from main street to the popular new station (which operates up to 12 trains per day to Canary Wharf and Central London).

Station Way is lit by SENSO lanterns, while Woolwich New Road was fitted with AXIA GEN 2 luminaires, which are cost-effective, sustainable, and weather and vandal resistant.

This innovative lighting has been key to creating a pleasant environment in and around the station, and to ensuring that passengers and their belongings remain safe.

Described as a “portal connecting the elements of the surrounding heritage-listed buildings and the large retail units”, Woolwich station was built by Balfour Beatty Kilpatrick and designed by Weston Williamson, Mott MacDonald and Arup Group (engineering).

Urbis Schréder’s “architecturally-thought-out” lighting solutions complement the “unique urban realm design” of the station, which was built after local councillors campaigned for Woolwich to be put on the Elizabeth Line map.

“High quality, yet energy-efficient and low-maintenance lighting provides a strategic asset for the development of a sustainable and beneficial railway infrastructure.” – Gary Bennett, Regional Director UK & Ireland

Renowned for its innovative lighting solutions, Urbis Schréder helps to illuminate city centres, roads, bridges, tunnels, buildings and workspaces.
