AECOM leads rail infrastructure design for 30km section of Sweden’s North Bothnia Line

Global infrastructure consultant AECOM is designing the infrastructure for a key section of coastal railway line between Umeå and Luleå in Sweden.

The firm is working on a 30km stretch of the 270km North Bothnia Line, undertaking the detailed design for the section between Gryssjön and Robertsfors. This includes 21 bridges and three sidings as well as a floodlit cross-country skiing track.

AECOM has delivered the first of the four design packages for this section of the line, which includes two of the bridges, a 300m railway in-cutting and associated roads. The four packages of rail supporting infrastructure AECOM will design cross farmland, rivers and bogs. In addition, AECOM will be designing the groundworks and infrastructure for the construction of track and overhead lines. The design work also includes around 45km of roads.

AECOM has been appointed to the role as designer by Trafikverket, the Swedish Transport Administration, and the complete contract is expected to last 26 months.

AECOM Sweden director Mark Miyaoka said: “This is a complex stretch of rail line with several technically challenging sections. Efficient design and sustainability are key focus areas throughout the design process to ensure that we not only help the construction timetable stay on track but also minimize emissions linked to the construction and life-cycle of the railway and associated infrastructure.

AECOM and Trafikverket are adopting a collaborative approach to the project enhancing communication and reducing project risks. Our Stockholm office is closely working with our global team of technical experts to ensure that communities along the route gain reliable, resilient rail infrastructure.”
