AmcoGiffen enters into service Huddersfield to Penistone line platform extensions for Network Rail

Last week AmcoGiffen NW&C team successfully entered into service five platform extensions at four stations across the north, as part of the Northern Programmes North of England Train Lengthening scheme for Network Rail.

These enhancements rounded off a phase of works on the Huddersfield to Penistone Line which included works at Huddersfield station over the Christmas period, and in January completing Brockholes and Berry Brow station platform extensions.

TOC’s Arriva Rail North (Northern) and TransPennine Express will now be able to operate new rolling stock types on the railway within the North of England, increasing capacity and easing passenger congestion for local communities, and importantly allowing key works to use these vital commuter routes

This recent completed phase of works included extending the single bi-directional station platforms at Lockwood, Honley and Denby Dale, as well as extending both platforms at Shepley station.

The platform extensions comprised of an innovative modular precast foundation and riser wall kicker that enabled all works post install to be above ground level, improving operative safety by removing the need for temporary works, in-situ concrete formwork, and open excavations after install.

Adhering to AmcoGiffen and Government guidance on COVID-19, entry into service milestones were achieved by avoiding stakeholder inspections on site, working remotely to provide all required documentation and reporting.

Damon Thackeray, NW&C Commercial Manager, commented: “Completing the platform extensions on-time ensures this commuter service remains available for key workers across the north. All of us at AmcoGiffen feel a tremendous sense of pride and admiration for the vital work and support they provide to our local communities during these challenging times.”
