AtkinsRéalis awarded major design contract for Sizewell C nuclear power station

AtkinsRéalis has been awarded a contract with Sizewell C to design key elements of the main nuclear power station site in Suffolk as part of its ongoing support to the project.

The new contract spans the design of significant parts of the proposed new nuclear power station, including design of the Conventional Island, Balance of Plant and Heat Sink, in addition to developing the concept design for permanent roads and networks to support the proposed construction and long-term operation of the site.

It builds on work AtkinsRéalis has been delivering for Sizewell C since 2014 to help progress the project, including site establishment; enabling works; detailed design of earthworks; as well as concept designs for the campus, desalination plan and 132kV system. AtkinsRéalis also has responsibility for the overarching design and engineering management for the civil works at the proposed plant.

AtkinsRéalis is a key delivery partner for EDF Energy’s existing nuclear fleet and Hinkley Point C in Somerset; for the new design works, AtkinsRéalis will rely on the use of digital tools to maximise replication from Hinkley Point C, supporting Sizewell C’s goal to reduce the cost of construction for the project. The team will drive design efficiencies by applying proven processes from its work with Hinkley Point C and the expertise of its established team.

AtkinsRéalis’ scope for the permanent roads and networks on site includes roads and hardstanding concept design, utility routing, drainage and modelling for extreme weather events. In addition, AtkinsRéalis will provide support on a major upgrade to the Sizewell Branch Line and aid the development of the new Green Rail Route (GRR) which will be used to bring workers and materials to the main power station construction site by sharing its expertise in advance signalling on local rail networks.

Chris Conboy, Managing Director – EMEA, Nuclear & Power at AtkinsRéalis: “Sizewell C has the potential to play a vital role in bolstering the UK’s energy security and powering the net zero transition. Our design contract with Sizewell C marks an important next step in keeping it on track for construction and comes at a time when the UK government has recently shown its continued commitment to the project.

“This appointment represents a significant and exciting programme of design works for AtkinsRéalis. We are looking forward to combining our experience in the nuclear sector and extensive learnings from Hinkley Point C to maximise opportunities for replication, drive efficiency and help reduce delivery costs.”

Once completed, the proposed Sizewell C nuclear power station could generate enough low-carbon electricity to supply six million homes for 60 years. The project will also create thousands of local jobs and contribute around £4billion to the regional economy.

AtkinsRéalis has extensive global nuclear expertise providing end-to-end solutions across the full nuclear life cycle. This includes nuclear new builds, plant operations, reactor life extension and late life management, as well as site decommissioning and remediation works. In the UK, the firm supports EDF’s operational fleet and new build programme, including design and civil, mechanical, electrical, process and nuclear engineering support for the end-to-end development of Hinkley Point C and enabling works at the planned Sizewell C site.
