BCM Expertly Deliver Liverpool Street Station Platform Extensions and Renovations for MTR Elizabeth Line

BCM has successfully completed the design and build of extensions to platforms 16 and 17 and taken platform 18 out of use as an operational platform at London’s Liverpool Street Station, one of the top 5 busiest stations in the UK. These works have been implemented to increase capacity for MTR Elizabeth Line’s new 205m Full Length Units (FLU) trains on the network.

These works have modernised parts of the station whilst increasing platform space making the area more pleasant for passengers when embarking and disembarking from the train. Moreover, the new 205m FLU trains will increase capacity by over 30 percent. This is crucial because over the next 25 years the demand for rail transport in the high peak hour towards London Liverpool Street is expected to grow between 40 and 60 per cent.

The key project deliverable was to complete the platform extensions and associated works by 31st May 2021 to ensure the client can fully introduce and operate its new rolling stock. This involved the management and interface of multiple contractors to deliver specialist activities such as modular platform extensions, slab track installation, roof mounted OLE and multidisciplinary design.

The key challenge throughout this project was to complete this major piece of work with the given time available, which meant BCM had to do the majority of the works during the Christmas and Easter Holidays working round the clock having just 2, 10-day blockades. The strict deadline from the client promoted BCM to employ innovative programme management processes to ensure that programme risk was reduced and managed through mitigation and float management. BCM is pleased to say that the deadline was achieved due to extensive planning, having an adaptive mentality on site, and coming together as a team with the amazing partners that assisted it on this project.

Multiple contractors have been involved in this project including specialist contractors whose help made this project possible. As such, BCM has developed collaborative relationships with shared pain/gain in our contracts to promote positive working relationships.

Furthermore, this project has promoted a new client relationship with MTR Corporation Limited, which BCM hope to build and develop moving forward. It has been able to align its values and capability with MTR to deliver exceptional service and stronger relations.

Mike Sandy, representative for MTR voiced that: “The relationship between BCM and MTR has been fundamental to the success of the project. We have worked together as a team from start to finish ensuring we achieve the common goal and objectives of the project, which we were most importantly able to accomplish on time.”
