CAF reveals full-scale mock-up of new Docklands Light Railway vehicles

Railway manufacturer CAF has released a video showing the full-scale model of the new CAF vehicles for the Docklands Light Railway.

The new 43 metro trains are made up of five cars and are based on CAF’s Inneo metro platform. The new trains are equipped with a signalling system that allows operation in Grade of Automation 3 (GoA3) and driverless operation (with train guard) in fully automatic mode. The equipment can be updated to operate in GoA4 (fully unattended train operation).

The new modern train will offer a more comfortable passenger experience with walk-through carriages, real time travel information, air conditioning and mobile charging points. The model review process was affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and the resultant travel restrictions. As a result, the model review sessions could not be physically conducted in Spain, as would be usual practice.

In order to try and mitigate the impact of COVID-19 in the best possible manner, the CAF design team suggested conducting these model review sessions via video conference, with the help of “walk through” videos, in-depth presentations and live streaming. This is further to the VR tool used for validation of the design.

CAF has applied its significant expertise and the innovative use of existing tools to mitigate the potential impact of this novel situation and has validated a full-scale model with the client remotely, without conducting a physical review.
