The Railway Benefit Fund (RBF) has announced the winners of their 2022 Heart of Gold Awards, after receiving over 2,000 votes. The charity was flooded with so many inspiring and heart-warming stories this year.
RBF President, Pete Waterman OBE, said: “We would like to thank all those nominated for displaying kindness and always going the extra mile for their colleagues and community.
“As a charity that solely supports railway people and their families, it is fantastic for us to see just how many inspirational people there are working in rail.”

Rail Hero Award- Neil Lathom
Congratulations to Neil Lathom from Freightliner!
Neil is a friend to everyone, a great supervisor and a really positive influence to all the staff at Freightliner’s Southampton Maritime terminal. Over the years, Neil has raised tens of thousands of pounds for various charities, taking part in half marathons, 100km bikes rides and even a boxing match.
Neil was very recently told that he has Non-Hodgkinson Lymphoma. When Neil initially discovered the lumps and the GP suggested it was cancer, he had a terrible time coming to terms with what was going on and feared he wouldn’t make it to Christmas. However, after learning that he has an 80% chance of making a full recovery, he has been nothing but positive and motivated, as well as trying to help others who are going through the same thing.
Rising Star Award- Amy Patrick

Congratulations to Amy Patrick from Alstom!
Amy joined Alstom in 2016, and in just five years, has achieved multiple promotions and now works as a highly respected Bid Manager. Meanwhile, as a single parent of a child with special educational needs (SEN), she has educated herself regarding the legislation for each part of the SEND system and obtained IPSEA qualifications.
Amy works tirelessly to support other parents of children with SEND at Alstom and outside of work. In the last 2 years, Amy has helped about 35 families in her spare time to get the help they need with their children’s cases. Out of these 35 cases, 31 were won prior to having to attend a tribunal. To provide moral support during tribunal cases, Amy stayed connected with parents. She was also able to signpost parents to free legal support and obtain legal aid where eligible.

Paul has dedicated 49 years of service to the rail industry; he first applied for a job at the Neville Hill Depot in 1973, and is still there today as QA Manager and Shift Lead. Working in the depot is part of Paul’s DNA and he takes pride in his job and the work that he carries out. He is a fount of all knowledge and is always mentoring others to support them in their career.

The staff at Johnstone Station are at the centre of their community. When walking into the booking office, you’re greeted with charitable donations for various causes, thank you letters from customers and the community, and a warm and welcoming environment.
The station supports a local social care charity, and every Christmas staff and customers provide care boxes for vulnerable people in the community. The team also supports Women’s Aid through their ‘Gift for Mum’ project, donating Christmas gifts for children to give to their mums on Christmas morning. During the pandemic, a team of volunteers at Johnstone arranged the safe collection and delivery of toiletries and food and drink supplies for staff and patients at a number of hospitals across the West of Scotland.
