D-Day veteran treated to a special afternoon tea on a CrossCountry service to Torquay

CrossCountry colleagues surprised a veteran on his way to attend D-Day celebrations in Torquay with a complimentary afternoon tea.

Mr.Rex, who is a proud recipient of The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service for his work selling poppies in support of the Royal British Legion, was travelling to Torquay to take part in the commemorations. He has travelled to D-Day celebrations from his home in Coventry for the last eighteen years, where he has been a guest of honour.

CrossCountry was alerted to Mr.Rex’s journey after he got in touch with Customer Relations and the team wanted to do something extra special to mark the occasion.

Tom Joyner, Managing Director at CrossCountry said: “The team was really touched by their conversation with Mr Rex and wanted to do something a little bit special to mark the occasion. We were delighted to surprise Mr Rex with afternoon tea to make his journey extra memorable. It’s fantastic to give back to someone who has given so much to our country. We hope to see Mr Rex on one of our services again next year.”

After last year’s event was unfortunately cancelled due to the pandemic, Mr.Rex was very much looking forward to being reunited with some familiar faces at this year’s celebrations.

Mr.Rex added: “I really didn’t expect anything like this. I have been travelling to attend D-Day celebrations for eighteen years. I’m really touched that you have all taken the time to do this for me. Thank you so much to Tom and CrossCountry for this kind gesture.”
