Derailment in Bavaria results in five deaths

At least 44 people were injured and five killed on Friday when a train derailed in Bavaria, Germany.

Of the injured, 15 had to be taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.

The train had been heading to Munich at the time when it left the tracks, having headed from the Alpine ski resort of Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

Six rescue helicopters were called in.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz (translated) said: “It’s shocking news and depressing pictures of the #train accident near #Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Every effort is being made to help the injured, who we wish a speedy recovery. Our thoughts are with the relatives.”

Markus Söder, Minister-President of Bavaria, (translated) said: “We mourn with the families of the victims and wish all those injured a speedy recovery. Great respect and thanks to all rescue workers for the quick help.”
