In April, the UK will be entering the new five-year control period (CP7), with £44bn of new funding to be invested into the UK railway.
While that sounds like a lot of money, it is £3bn less funding than was allocated for CP6 and comes after a period of sustained challenges such as COVID, Brexit, the War in Ukraine and increased inflation. There is going to be pressure to do more with less over the course of the control period to meet the industry’s £3.4bn efficiency targets.
