Newcastle train driver, David Robinson, has waved goodbye to his treasured locks following a public head-shave to raise money for the Children’s Heart Unit Fund (CHUF).
David, who lives in North Shields and joined Northern in January this year, was stripped of his hair of 20-years on the concourse at Newcastle Central this morning (Wednesday, 31 August) with his colleague, John Humes, doing the honours.
His support for CHUF follows the diagnoses of one of his twin daughters, Aurelia, with a congenital heart condition called Tetralogy of Fallot.
CHUF supports children and families who receive treatment at the Children’s Heart Unit at the Freeman Hospital and the many other hospitals providing care for cardiac patients throughout the North of England.
David Robinson said: “Aurelia’s diagnosis was a whirlwind. We went from a routine hospital visit to being hooked up to high flow oxygen, a transfer to the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit and open-heart surgery – all in 36 hours.
“My partner and I ended up living in special accommodation at the hospital so that we could stay close to her – and that really made all the difference. I can’t thank CHUF and The Sick Children’s Trust enough. My boss and the team at Northern have been incredibly supportive too.
“All the money raised will support CHUF’s work, so if by shaving my hair – something I’ve been known for since my ‘emo’ days 16 years go – it’s the least I can do!”
