Shapps believes there is “uncertainty and lack of detail” around East West Rail project

A letter from the Secretary of State about a major highways project has put something of a question mark on the status of the East West Rail project.

In the cumulative effects section of his consideration to approve the A428 Black Cat to Caxton Gibbet development, Secretary of State Grant Shapps has said he agreed there was “uncertainty and lack of detail” around East West Rail, enough for it to not be included in the road schemes cumulative effects assessment.

Furthermore, he said that there will be a need for the A428 project “irrespective of whether the proposed East West Rail scheme is delivered”.

Shapps has previously told radio station LBC that remaining stages of East West Rail should be scrapped.
