Fresh focus on training to boost tramway safety

The Light Rail Safety and Standards Board (LRSSB) is stepping up support for specialist training within light rail to deliver a further boost to safety, operational performance, and the wellbeing of those working in the sector.

The organisation is working with sector professionals to identify appropriate courses and aims to provide them with access to practical information alongside open forums to share best practice.

It’s also consulting the sector on its current and future needs following a recent workshop that highlighted how effective training, as well as driving up safety standards, helps employees feel valued.

Craig O’Brien, Head of Engineering Safety and Innovation at the LRSSB, explained: “Clearly, the sector already recognises that effective training is vital to the safe and effective running of our tramways, but the benefits for individuals are sometimes overlooked.

“There is significant evidence suggesting that enhanced learning and development programmes are directly linked to improved staff wellbeing, which, in turn, has a positive impact on performance and safety.

“Moving forward, the LRSSB will work with partners to encourage investment in training and is committed to playing a pivotal role in sourcing appropriate courses, work that overlaps with our increasing focus on the health of light rail employees.”

As part of the consultation, a survey will also be sent to representatives of organisations across light rail to help the LRSSB better understand their current and future requirements.

“The initial workshop in Birmingham proved invaluable to helping us understand the training challenges faced by the sector, with representatives from networks in Edinburgh, Blackpool, Sheffield, Manchester and the West Midland Metro discussing a wide range of topics,” Craig said.

“These included control room competencies and training on overhead line equipment, and future meetings will provide a continuous feedback loop to make certain the LRSSB continues to add value where it is most required,” he added.
