GRAHAM’s vital East Bank connection work shortlisted for prestigious awards

Construction and civil engineering contractor GRAHAM has been shortlisted in several categories at this year’s prestigious ICE London Civil Engineering Awards.

The recognition comes for its Carpenters Land Bridge work – a vital pedestrian and cycle bridge that will link the £1.1 billion East Bank culture and education district on Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park to International Quarter London.

The £3.5 million contract involved GRAHAM designing and installing a 66m long steel bridge, formed of a portal frame and bearings, a concrete cill beam and bearings within an existing retaining wall structure.

The bridge, which crosses Network Rail and Docklands Light Railways lines, was installed in the early hours of Christmas morning in a bid to minimise disruption on train services.

The efforts have been recognised at the ICE’s awards, which celebrate outstanding civil engineering achievement, innovation and ingenuity, with GRAHAM shortlisted in the following categories:

· Greatest Contribution to London

· Best Infrastructure Project

· Innovation Award

· Award for Community Benefit

· Bazalgette Award for Sustainability and Resilience

· Digital Engineering Award

· People Choice Award

Leo Martin, Managing Director of GRAHAM’s civil engineering division, said: “Our teams have worked incredibly hard on this project, so I am delighted the efforts have been recognised at the ICE London Civil Engineering Awards.

“This was a complicated project, but one that our expert teams completed successfully with very little disruption.”

The bridge was designed using Business Information Modelling software, consisting of both object-orientated 3D geometrical and non-graphical date, which was updated throughout the course of the project.

GRAHAM’s Carpenters Land Bridge work is among 10 projects that will now go head-to-head in the ICE London People Choice competition – voted for by the public. The voting, which runs for a whole month, is due to open later this month, with the public having their say on which project they think has made the most positive contribution to London.
