GRP a Popular Solution for Platform Extensions

The need for longer platforms has driven demand for the use of GRP (glass reinforced plastic) – a Bristol company has found.

EziKlamp – supplier to Network Rail for around 15 years – has responded to demands for flexible and safe ways to extend platforms by designing and building bespoke structures from GRP.

As a non-conductive material, GRP is ideal for track-side structures and it is much more cost-effective and flexible than a traditional build with steel and concrete.

The increase in rolling stock has meant that many stations have needed to lengthen platforms. Redhill station in Surrey is one of many to have undergone a platform extension, which EziKlamp designed and built, commissioned by projects managers, Atkins. The project also included steps for driver access and fencing to secure the area, with a gate for authorised access.

Simon Botterill, EziKlamp’s Technical Sales Manager says: “We have seen an increased demand for all our custom-designed track-side solutions in recent years. As well as platform extensions GRP is popular for embankment steps, driver walkways, pop ups and signal maintenance platforms. GRP is also in demand because it is lighter than many building products making manhandling on site easier.”

As a business, EziKlamp has provided specialist barrier solutions from drawings since their formation in 1999. As well as the rail sector, the company supports education and healthcare as well as the general construction and civil engineering industries.
