Half-price winter train travel to encourage Northern customers to ditch the car

Northern has introduced a new railcard, entitling local residents to half price travel throughout winter.

With the cost of living crisis hitting everyone’s pockets, the ‘Dales Railcard’ is sure to be well received by residents of North Yorkshire and Cumbria. Only certain postcodes are eligible for the discount travel (full details of the scheme available here), which sees residents entitled to half price, off-peak day return fares on the Bentham and Settle & Carlisle lines this winter (between Sunday, 30 October 2022 and Saturday, 1 April 2023) for just the price of a £10 up-front railcard.

Mark Powles, customer and commercial director at Northern, said: “The ‘Dales Railcard’ is a great example of Northern and community rail groups working together for the benefit of local people.

“During the winter months, when the number of tourists exploring the Dales by rail is lower, we have extra capacity on our services – which allows us to offer this special discount.

“I would encourage all residents across North Yorkshire and Cumbria to get themselves a ‘Dales Railcard’ and enjoy all the region has to offer – at half price.”

The offer comes as part of a campaign from Northern to encourage people that live in the region to ditch the car and take the train.
