Heatwave: advice upgraded for services headed north from London to “do not travel”

As the heatwave sparks unprecedented temperatures — including the hottest night in the UK on record — Network Rail has upgraded advice, telling passengers to stay out of a so-called red zone, demarking much of the UK north of London.

As reported, trains were to be stopped on the East Coast Main Line for a set period — but as of last night the infrastructure operator determined none should run for the full day.

A new record rail temperature of 62 degrees was recorded in Suffolk yesterday.

With no services planned to run into or out of London King’s Cross all day, there are also now no Thameslink or Great Northern services planned to run north of London all day with East Midlands Railway only running very limited services between Derby, Nottingham, Luton, Bedford and London, which will stop altogether during the hottest part of the day (lunchtime to 1900).

Tyne And Wear Metro Suspended it services at Haymarket, Regent Centre and St James in either direction because of the weather and the line closure. Nexus, which owns and operates the Metro, said lines had sagged.
