‘Iconic’ locomotive Sir Nigel Gresley arrives at the North Yorkshire Moors Railway

Following a 10-year overhaul, No. 4498 Sir Nigel Gresley has returned to the North Yorkshire Moors Railway (NYMR) where it will be one of the stars of the Annual Steam Gala, which runs from 22 to 25 September.

In addition to its appearance at this weekend’s gala, NYMR has announced that tickets can now be purchased on select October dates for a pre-booked special journey hauled by ‘Sir Nigel Gresley’ – which in 1959 set the official post-war speed record for steam traction of 112 mph.

These trains will operate on 3, 4, 5, 10, 11 and 12 October, running between Grosmont and Pickering, with the newly overhauled A4 hauling the LNER Coach Association Teak coaches.

The ticket price includes an adult gift gag worth over £24, all in an NYMR Jute Bag. This will include a limited edition A4 Pacific Enamel Badge in black livery, NYMR guide book and pen, Lottie Shaw biscuits and the pre-booked journey.

Trains depart Grosmont at 0930, 1230 and 1530, and there will be a 10 to 15 minute break for photography at Pickering when the A4 runs around its train.

Tickets are £51 for adults, £43 for adult members, staff and volunteers, children aged 0-15 are free, dogs are £3 and a compartment with a maximum of six adults, including six gift bags, is £204.
