Work has started to create 300 new car parking spaces at a Hertfordshire railway station.
Greater Anglia has leased an area at the back of Broxbourne station to build a new surface car park.
The station currently has 471 spaces with 24 accessible parking bays.
The work, which will cost around £800,000, is due to be completed this autumn.
The existing land will be excavated, tarmacked and relined to create a new car park. CCTV and LED lighting will also be installed – making it more secure for customers.
Simone Bailey, Greater Anglia’s Asset Management Director, said: “Broxbourne is a popular station and many passengers choose to travel to the station by car.
“Although fewer people are currently travelling due to the ongoing Coronavirus outbreak, the spaces will be needed when passenger numbers return to normal.
“Last year nearly 2 million people used the station and we are making sure that the station is ready for future growth by extending the car park now.
“We apologise for any inconvenience caused to customers while the work is ongoing.”
The work is part of a £25 million investment in improving car parks across the Greater Anglia network, including installing ANPR at 20 car parks, adding an extra 1,782 spaces, fitting LED lights, improving CCTV and security and re-surfacing.
Government advice currently is to avoid public transport unless you cannot travel another way.
Face coverings should be worn on Greater Anglia stations and trains.
