A Tees Valley Mayor spokesperson has revealed today (February 13) vital improvements being made to Middlesbrough Station as part of a £34 million scheme will see materials purchased from British Steel used in the overhaul.

An article in the Northern Echo says the fabrication of the steel will be taking place at Middlesbrough-based CB Construction (Cleveland) Ltd.

40 tonnes of mainly beams and columns which will form part of the ticket hall, new staircase, wall structures and undercroft are set to come to the station site next month.

The Office of Rail and Road says it has secured key improvements to how Avanti passengers plan and book their journeys.

This follows a call from the rail regulator for immediate improvement to Avanti’s timetable recovery plan, after its initial improvements stalled. This meant weekend timetables were only being finalised a few days in advance, making it difficult for passengers to plan and book with confidence.

Avanti’s more resilient recovery plan shows a pathway to full and sustained recovery to producing and finalising timetables in line with current industry norms by mid-May.

The Midlands Rail Hub proposals, outlining up to £1.5 billion of new and improved rail infrastructure, were discussed during the visit.
