Rail Minister Kevin Foster believes there is a deal to be done with the rail unions.

Speaking at the Rail Forum Annual Conference in Birmingham on 11 October, the minister said: “We believe there’s a positive future for our railways. We can address some of the longstanding issues around working practices.

“We’re seeing great growth on leisure, particularly on a Sunday, which means we are going to have to move away from the 1919 era agreement on voluntary working on a Sunday.”

He continued: “I think there is a deal to be done because with the amount of investments going into the railway there are more jobs coming in the future.”

Buckthorn Partners LLP (Buckthorn), a UK investment firm focused on energy services businesses, has entered into an agreement to acquire Amey Group PLC, a UK-headquartered infrastructure services and consulting engineering company.

Buckthorn will partner in this transaction with One Equity Partners, a middle market private equity firm focused on the industrial, healthcare, and technology sectors in North America and Europe.

Buckthorn and OEP will invest in Amey to strengthen and grow the business and to access new opportunities, particularly in energy transition, where Amey is particularly well-placed to support the UK’s Net Zero ambitions.

Northern is celebrating the first-year anniversary of its takeover of Neville Hill TrainCare Centre on the outskirts of Leeds.

Northern became the sole operator of the facility on 17 October 2021 and set about transforming the massive depot into a catalyst for change and delivery for rail in the North of England.

Jack Commandeur, engineering director at Northern, said: “TrainCare Centres like Neville Hill are fundamental to the daily operation of the UK rail system. Although geographically well defined, their impact on the railway system and its supply chain are far reaching.”

Finally, A historic railway sign has been restored at the request of the family of the man who made it 84 years ago.

An article on the BBC website says the structure, installed north of York station, marks the halfway point between London and Edinburgh.

It was handmade by apprentice engineer Ken Bainbridge in 1938 using chisels and a hacksaw.

His daughter asked for the sign to be repaired after it had become “a little weathered”, according to Network Rail, which has now restored it.
