Rail bosses are poised to bring back InterCity 125 carriages from the 1980s to limit the fallout from mass cancellations after faulty Hitachi trains were taken out of service.

An article in The Daily Telegraph says Great Western Railway is considering bringing in additional British Rail-era carriages as part of emergency measures to keep passengers moving.

Other operators are supporting GWR, which runs express trains between London, Wales and the west.


HS2 is to use its first giant tunnelling machine today.

The story features in several of the newspapers including The Daily Mail, that says the 558ft machine will dig a 10-mile tunnel under the Chiltern Hills, starting from a site in Buckinghamshire near the M25.

It will work non-stop for three years and is one of 10 tunnel-boring machines being used between London and the West Midlands for Phase 1 of the high-speed railway.

The Crossrail project has reached the next important milestone with the trial running of four trains an hour underway as part of the major railway trials taking place throughout this year.

Tottenham Court Road Elizabeth line station has also become the third of the new central London stations to be handed over to TfL.

This is ahead of the Elizabeth line opening and is a crucial moment in the project with the railway set to open in the first half of 2022.

Finally, Metrolink’s fleet of trams proved they really can go the distance, after clocking up more than one-hundred million kilometres serving Greater Manchester’s residents, visitors and key workers.

The current 123-tram fleet, which averages 37,000km every weekday, passed the major milestone late last month.
