A rail group has spoken of its fears that plans to restructure the operation of Britain’s railways could be axed.

An article on the BBC website says The Rail Forum, a national industry body based in Derby, said it feared government plans to overhaul the system with a new body, named Great British Railways (GBR) might not go ahead.

Former Transport Secretary Grant Shapps announced the plans for GBR in May 2021 to replace a “fragmented” system.

The government said it remained committed to reforms.


An article on Business Green says up to a third of Coca-Cola products shipped from London to Yorkshire will soon be transported by train, after the company’s European bottler announced it was steaming ahead with plans to reduce its transport emissions by ramping up its rail operations.

Coca-Cola’s European subsidiary yesterday unveiled plans to transport 31 per cent of the products it ships between manufacturing sites and warehouses in London to England’s North-East by rail, instead of road.


Metrolink has been boosted by the arrival of the last of 27 new trams, as part of a £72 million investment in the network.

Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) signed a contract with Bombardier Transportation UK – now Alstom – and Kiepe Electric to produce the M5000 in July 2018.

The last of the new batch of trams was received by Metrolink operator KeolisAmey Metrolink (KAM) on 24 September and is undergoing testing and commission before going into service.

The Global Centre of Rail Excellence (GCRE) is inviting prospective supply chain partners and suppliers to meet the buyer and find out more about contracts expected to be worth in the region of £250 million.

Details of the market engagement event have been published on the Welsh Government’s procurement portal Sell2Wales.

The event will take place on Wednesday, 2nd November at 1.30pm at City Hall, Cardiff.
