It is with deep sadness to learn of the passing of railway pioneer Adrian Shooter CBE.

He began his career with British Rail in 1970 and is considered one of the leading architects of the modern railway, famed as the founder of Chiltern Railways, chairman of DB Regio UK, Vivarail and SLC Rail.

Paying tribute, Richard Allan, managing director of Chiltern Railways said: “We and our customers owe him an enormous debt of gratitude for the vision, drive and passion that he and his team brought to bear in creating and developing Chiltern from 1996 onwards.”

Rail minister Huw Merriman is set to hold the latest round of talks with the union RMT and train operators after this week’s strike brought the UK to a standstill.

An article on City A.M says Merriman will meet with union bosses as well as with train companies and Network Rail tomorrow in an eleventh-hour attempt to solve the rail dispute after several failed negotiations.

The union RMT is currently in the middle of two different disputes over jobs and pay.


A new bridge that will carry direct rail services between Oxford and Cambridge has been lifted into position over the route of HS2, the high speed rail line under construction between London, Birmingham and the North.

Engineers working for HS2 used an enormous 600 tonne crane to lift the new bridge into position north of Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire.

The bridge deck – which weighs the same as 25 double decker buses – will carry East West Rail services linking Oxford, Bedford and Cambridge, largely along a route that was closed in the 1960s.

A search is underway to find the owner of a lost teddy found on a Kent-bound train.

An article on the ITV website says the fluffy animal was discovered on a Southeastern train travelling from St Pancras to Ashford International on Wednesday.

Staff on the 15:49 service found the toy and are appealing for help to get it back to its owner in time for Christmas.
