Concerns have been raised about the financial position of a heritage railway in North Yorkshire.

According to an article on the BBC website auditors looking into the finances of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway (NYMR) said it made a loss of over £500,000 in the year ending February 2023.

In a report, they stated they had “significant doubt” on the NYMR’s ability to operate as a going concern.

NYMR said it had a number of initiatives in place to ensure it remained financially sustainable.


Network Rail has named six firms to deliver a £1bn programme of medium-sized projects for control period 7 in its north west and central territory.

An article on Construction Enquirer says the deal forms part of a flight of frameworks to be set up covering the “Backbone of Britain” route.

The framework covers projects from £100,000 to £7m, known as category B+C works, and comes into force this April, running to 2029.

Story bagged both civils and building works across the entire region, with Murphy and Amalgamated Construction also picking up multi-lots and Amey Rail taking all power and signalling projects.


Government funding has been confirmed to support the development of a new rail maintenance depot in Shipley.

An article on Insider Media Limited says Rail Minister Huw Merriman confirmed plans yesterday (14 March) as part of the Government’s £3.9bn investment into the Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU) to build a new maintenance facility in Shipley.

About £100 million will be provided towards the Shipley TrainCare Centre, which is set to provide extra resilience to the North of England’s rail network.

Porterbrook, has announced that it has been successful in its bid to acquire 30 Class 379 Electrostars.

It intends to lease the fleet to Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR) to run on the Great Northern route, as per a notice published 12th March 2024.

Previously operated by Greater Anglia before coming off lease, the EMU fleet was built in 2011. Porterbrook expects that it will run for at least another 20 years.
