Self-charging trains could make their way onto Britain’s railways, transforming the future of transport after receiving government funding.
Top innovators and inventers have won prize money to bring their innovations to life, as part of the First of a Kind 2022 competition. This year’s competition, in partnership with Innovate UK, focused on new concepts that will transform rail travel for passengers and decarbonising the network.
FOAK 2022 saw 24 innovators receive a share of more than £5 million with grants of up to £400,000 each.
From technology making our railways greener than ever before by removing harmful emissions from train exhausts to research into powering our railways with renewable energy, this year’s successful bidders will revolutionise the future of train travel for generations to come.
The opening of the first new railway station in Bristol for almost 100 years has been further delayed.
An article on the BBC website says Portway Park and Ride station on the Severn Beach line won’t be ready until “early next year”, the West of England Combined Authority (WECA) confirmed.
The station, which has so far cost £4.2 million, should have opened in the summer.
A WECA spokesperson said delays were around fitting the station out with electrical supply and data cabling.
State-of the art digital signalling is being introduced, on the East Coast Main Line providing continuous, real-time information to the driver’s cab.
Work is taking place as part of the government funded transformational East Coast Digital Programme (ECDP), aimed at boosting reliability and allowing faster recovery from disruption, enabling a better and more punctual, service for passengers.
Over the weekend of 7 and 8 January the new system is being tested in the Wood Green-New Barnet area of North London, preparing the area for digital signalling while reducing faults involved with the current system.
Three derailed freight wagons have been successfully recovered by railway engineers in Carlisle so major repairs can ramp up to get passengers back on the move as soon as possible.
The derailment, which involved one locomotive hauling 14 wagons, each filled with 80 tonnes of powdered cement, happened on Wednesday 19th October as it travelled between Clitheroe and Carlisle.
It caused significant damage to a bridge, track and line side equipment including signalling and points cabling.
