Building a city’s second railway station is due to begin in the new year after a council signed a contract with Network Rail.

An article on the BBC website says Beaulieu Park station in Chelmsford will be the first new station on the Great Eastern mainline, between London and Norwich, for more than 100 years.

Essex County Council said it would be funded by £218 million from government, and the remaining £34 million from an enterprise partnership and the developer.

It is expected to open in late 2025.

Londoners woke up today to severe disruption on the tube network as rail workers continue to strike.

An article on the City A.M says members of the union RMT working at Network Rail and 14 other operators will walk out today and tomorrow as part of a long-standing dispute over jobs and salaries.

They will be joined by platform workers affiliated with the TSSA union.

A report released by the Office of Rail and Road (ORR) has revealed total passenger revenue between July and September was 71 per cent for the same quarter three years ago and passenger usage was 80.3 per cent.

In response to the figures, Rail Partners’ Chief Executive Andy Bagnall said: “The latest ORR passenger usage statistics underline the financial challenges facing the rail industry from the pandemic and the current industrial action.”
