More solar panels, wildflower zones and electric vehicle charge points may be appearing at railway stations across the country as all rail companies responsible for managing railway stations today pledged their commitment to making stations more sustainable.

The pledge was made as the rail industry published a new Sustainable Stations: Best Practice Guide, which details ways in which train operators can meet this commitment in support of global goals of decarbonisation, reducing waste and supporting local plant and animal life. The document will also be used by train companies when agreeing future contracts.

ScotRail is announcing a return to on-train duties for ticket examiners and conductors from Monday, 26 April, with customers urged to plan ahead to stay safe.

The return of these duties, including checking and selling tickets, is the latest step towards a level of normality for customers, after travel restrictions were lifted last week.

The presence of staff moving throughout trains is expected to reduce incidents of anti-social behaviour on services and assist in making sure trains are kept clean and tidy during journeys.

Passengers heading for Edinburgh and Glasgow on west coast main line trains face disruption for two weeks after track was damaged during engineering work at the weekend.

An article in The Scotsman says Avanti West Coast services from London to Edinburgh Waverley and Glasgow Central are being delayed by up to ten minutes pending repairs between Symington and Thankerton  in South Lanarkshire.

Network Rail said a machine which spreads ballast stones under the tracks had damaged the sleepers they rest on over a two-mile stretch on Sunday night. This has forced northbound trains to slow to 20mph through the area as a precaution.

Finally, as the supercars of the avian world, peregrine falcons bow down to no one. So when a pair decided to make their nest on one of Britain’s great bridges, humans had to change plans.

The article in The Times says Network Rail has decided to halt refurbishments to the grade II listed Britannia Bridge linking mainland Wales to Anglesey after two of the birds took a shine to the site.
