The Transport Secretary says they are moving to a ‘different type of railway’ and that the plans could be accelerated because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The news was revealed as Grant Shapps was asked by the Transport Committee about what will happen when emergency measures agreements with train operating companies in the UK ends in September.

He also revealed that the challenges of the  pandemic has led to a delay in the publishing of the Williams’ Review, which will make recommendations for reform that prioritises passengers and taxpayers interests.

Glasgow Subway could face closure if it does not receive government support to offset potential losses of up to £20 million as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

That’s according to Glasgow Live, which writes that SPT says that ‘maintaining services is simply not viable’ if it does not receive financial support.

An article in the Glasgow Times says crunch talks will be held tomorrow to discuss future financial stability.


HS2 has revealed the names of the construction firms in the running to build Birmingham Curzon Street station – a contract worth £570 million.

BAM Ferrovial, Laing O’Rourke and Mace Dragados are all in the running for the high-speed rail project’s landmark city centre terminus.

The station will be net zero carbon in operation and will adopt the latest eco-friendly design and sustainable technologies.

Finally, and train operator Greater Anglia has signed up to the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Lanyard scheme so that passengers with hidden disabilities can get help when travelling.

The story, which features on ITV, says stocks of the lanyards and ID cards will be kept at main staffed stations so that they can be given out to those who need them.

They feature a sunflower on a green background to signal to others that the holder may have a disability that is not immediately obvious.
