Around one-third of projects in the government’s £10 billion Rail Network Enhancements Pipeline have failed to advance in the three years since the 2019-2024 plan was published.

An article on Construction Enquirer says there is now deep concern among contractors and suppliers about slippage and a lack of official programme transparency.

The Railway Industry Association has now taken the step of carrying out its own progress audit on the planned rolling programme of 58 enhancement projects, after the Department for Transport’s failure to publish annual progress updates as originally promised.

The government initially committed £10.4 billion for enhancements in CP6, but has since revised down this amount to £9.6 billion. But the supply chain warns it is now operating in the dark about exactly which projects will progress and which will be delayed or cancelled.

Crossrail’s Bond Street station finally opens to the public today.

An article on New Civil Engineer says Elizabeth line services will begin calling at Bond Steet from this morning with two new entrances, at Davies Street near Oxford Street and Hanover Square near Regent Street.

The station missed the grand opening of the Elizabeth line which began running services through central London in May.

Major planned engineering works are underway on the Tunbridge Wells to Hastings line. The week-long work will help improve the reliability of the route.

The line was built in the early 1850s and has suffered with reliability problems since it opened, with the earthworks – cuttings and embankments – which carry the line through the rolling countryside of Kent and East Sussex causing the majority of the headaches for travellers and engineers alike.
