The West Midlands has been handed £1 billion funding to expand the regions tram, train, bus and cycle networks and drive a green transport revolution.

The West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) secured the money from the government’s City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement (CRSTS) fund announced at the weekend.

Hundreds of millions of pounds will now be used to kickstart a wide range of projects from new Metro tram extensions to more electric vehicle charging points.

Meanwhile the Treasury has announced it has backed the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority’s bid for transformative investment in the region’s transport network.

It will see £570 million spent in the region, helping deliver major improvements to the region’s bus, rail and active travel network and the renewal of Supertram.

A rail union has said that ScotRail members will continue industrial action into the new year over pay disputes.

An article in The Herald says RMT has announced that further strike action was being planned as part of a dispute which has lasted for eight months, causing disruption to rail services across Scotland.

In response, Ian McConnell, ScotRail’s chief operating officer, said: “I’m disappointed and incredibly frustrated that RMT representatives have point blank rejected our latest proposal.”

Work is underway to move a disused signalbox at Hertford East railway station to make room for longer trains.

The works will see engineers dismantle an old signalbox at Hertford East as part of the company’s new trains project.

Greater Anglia customers are asked to check their journeys as the essential engineering work will continue for eight days between Broxbourne and Hertford East from last weekend.

A Northern conductor who first picked up a paintbrush during the COVID-19 pandemic is having his debut exhibition at his home station.

Paul Mirfin, from Knaresborough, has worked for the rail operator for 19 years, decided he needed a new therapeutic hobby just a few months ago.

Paul’s oil paintings will be on display in Harrogate station’s waiting room on platform one between 9am and 5pm on October 30 for passengers and colleagues to admire.
