The Department for Transport has today announced a Direct Award to LNER to continue to operate intercity rail services from London King’s Cross to the East Midlands, Yorkshire, the North East and Scotland.

The Direct Award runs for three years with an available extension period of up to 26 rail periods (equivalent to 2 years).

Strathclyde Partnership for Transport is meeting today to discuss its financial stability.

The organisation continues to call on Transport for Scotland for financial assistance to help address the financial gap arising as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

SPT has identified a potential deficit of between £12.5 million and £20 million for the current financial year.

Compensation claims for delayed rail journeys rose by almost a fifth in the past year, with those that adopted the 15-minute delay refund scheme seeing big increases.

An article in The Daily Telegraph says 6.3 million claims by passengers were dealt with by train operators in the last financial year, according to details by The Office of Rail and Road.

In The Times it reports TfL Rail saw a 221 per cent increase and East Midlands Railway 156 per cent rise.


A landslip on the West Highland Line is causing major disruption today.

An article in The Herald says that the line between Lochailort and Glenfinnan is closed and no trains between Fort William and Mallaig will run until the end of service today.

Network Rail has specialist engineers on-site and are putting plans in place to repair and open the line.


Finally, and Sir Peter Hendy, chairman of Network Rail, is to lead an oversight board for HS2 London Euston work.

It is a series of changes announced by HS2 Minister Andrew Stephenson in a letter to the Transport Select Committee.

There will also be the appointment of new Non-Executive Directors to provide additional leadership, oversight and scrutiny of the project, with those roles expected to be announced shortly.
