Avanti West Coast train services will be nationalised from March next year, the government has announced.

An article on the BBC website says “For years, we’ve heard stories of Avanti underperforming, with passengers left paying the price. Enough is enough,” Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander said.

The move is part of a government plan to improve rail infrastructure, cut train delays and improve experiences for passengers.

Avanti West Coast’s managing director said he was “proud of what we’ve achieved over the last six years”. The company’s contract was due to come to an end on 7 March.

The Welsh Government is calling on the Chancellor to bring forward £1 billion of rail investment for Wales and provide further support for struggling households in next month’s Autumn Budget.

An article on Wales 24/7 says the Chancellor is finalising the Budget ahead of its delivery on October 28, with Cabinet Minister for Finance Elin Jones writing to the Chancellor setting out a series of proposals for Wales.

The Welsh Government is seeking what it describes as a fair deal on funding, investment and opportunity, with requests covering rail, the cost of living, public spending and investment in major projects.

Among the proposals is a call to bring forward £1 billion from an existing £14 billion rail investment commitment to accelerate improvement projects across Wales.

Aspirations of creating an electrified four-track railway through part of West Yorkshire moved closer to reality over the weekend.

An article on The Telegraph and Argus says at Bradley Junction, between Mirfield and Huddersfield, major progress has taken place in recent days as engineers worked towards installing the new ‘fast lines’.

Fresh ballast has been laid over the weekend and the new sleepers were being installed late on Sunday on the section of track near Colne Bridge Road.

At a future point, the existing two tracks will eventually become the ‘slow lines’ and the two tracks currently being installed will be used as the ‘fast lines’ – feeding into a new 1km section of curved track at Heaton Lodge Junction.

Officials looking to expand transport links and support major housing growth in a borough over the next 15 years have proposed plans for a new railway station.

An article on the BBC website says Thurrock Council’s draft transport strategy sets out how the borough’s road, rail, walking and cycling networks could evolve alongside planned development.

It includes a new station for the Essex town of Corringham – on the line between Stanford-le-Hope and Pitsea – providing rail access for residents in Corringham, Fobbing and Lower Langdon.
