A landmark deal confirmed this morning will lead to devolved transport powers and millions of pounds in new funding for South Yorkshire.
The order for the devolution deal will be laid out in Parliament today, after letters of agreement were submitted by Sheffield City Region Mayor Dan Jarvis, and council leaders in Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield.
Mr Jarvis has described the news as a ‘landmark moment’ in which powers are being transferred from Westminster with more decisions about South Yorkshire being made in South Yorkshire.
Thousands of passengers in the North East of England will be benefiting from more frequent, reliable rail services and better connections thanks to £15 million of government investment.
Horden Station in Durham is today opening to passengers for the first time, served by one train per hour calling at stations between Newcastle and Middlesbrough.
The £10.55 million project, led by Durham County Council and Network Rail, has been supported from the Department for Transport’s New Station Fund.
Work has started today on the £14.5 million redevelopment of Motherwell station.
Contractors have started on the initial stage of the redevelopment project with the demolition of an old building at the bottom of platform 1 to make way for a new staff car park.
John MacDonald, ScotRail’s Senior Project Manager said once all the work has been completed, the improvements will transform the relationship between the station and the town centre.
Finally, and a new tourist train from Skipton to Appleby looks set to open up the Yorkshire Dales to walkers and cyclists.

The service will operate six days a week from July 12th to September 20th.
