A train driver killed in a crash continued to speed up after acknowledging a red signal before hitting another train, investigators have said.

An article on the ITV news website says Shaun Burton, 60, died when the East Midlands Railway (EMR) train he was driving hit the back of a stationary train run by the same operator at Elstow near Bedford on June 19.

The crash derailed both trains with around 257 people on board, with more than 160 passengers injured and 102 taken to hospital.

The Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) said in an interim report on Thursday that data recorders from the train showed the Corby to London St Pancras train acknowledged a red signal warning but then “continued to accelerate, reaching a maximum speed of 76mph”.

The report said the train driver initially applied the full service brake around 10 seconds before the crash.

About two seconds later the emergency brake was applied when the train was travelling at around 75mph, around 200 metres from the back of the other train, which was en route from Nottingham to London St Pancras.

Darlington has moved a step closer to gaining a direct rail link with the South Coast after Grand Central secured four trains for its proposed Newcastle to Brighton service.

An article on The Northern Echo says the new route would connect the North East directly with Brighton, stopping at Darlington, and would bypass central London.

If approved by the Office of Rail and Road, the service would run up to five times a day each way between Newcastle and Brighton.

The longest HS2 viaduct structures in the Midlands have been completed.

An article on the BBC website says they span the M42 northbound and southbound and run 1,400 metres in length.

The pair, in the planning since 2022 and now in place in Water Orton, Warwickshire, form the upper section of the Delta Junction, which is dubbed the railway’s answer to Birmingham’s infamous looping motorway interchange Spaghetti Junction.
