East West Railway Company (EWR Co) has announced that Beth West will take over as chief executive officer with effect from tomorrow.

The former regional south managing director at Balfour Beatty and commercial director for HS2 takes over from Simon Blanchflower.

On taking on the new role she said: “I intend to see EWR at the forefront of innovation, exploring new and better ways to plan, build and run rail in the UK.”

Rail passenger numbers have hit 80 per cent of pre-COVID levels, the highest figure since March 15th 2020.

The statistics, released by the Department for Transport, have been described as “hugely positive” by the Railway Industry Association (RIA).

Kate Jennings, policy director at RIA, said: “These statistics are especially strong over the weekends, which is a clear vote of confidence in using rail for leisure travel.”

The project to reinstate Levenmouth rail link is now well underway, and so there are a number of work elements springing into action.

Being close to the river and streams which flow into it, one early and important task is the need to thoroughly inspect the bridges on the route to ensure they are in a good condition and structurally sound to carry the new railway.

At five underbridges along the route, Network Rail has carried out inspections and a programme of work is now underway to bring them up to scratch.
