Passengers in the South West will benefit from more reliable train journeys thanks to a new £82 million government funded sea wall protecting the vital coastal rail route in Dawlish.

In a visit to Devon today (3 July 2023), Transport Secretary Mark Harper will attend Dawlish station to mark the completion of the wall and officially open a brand-new railway station at Marsh Barton, near Exeter – two projects that will boost local and regional connections, helping grow the economy.

The new, rebuilt sea wall will protect the safety of local passengers from extreme weather conditions along the coast. It has been completed in two phases, with the latter stage protecting the grade 2 listed Dawlish railway station.

Disruption to rail journeys are expected in many parts of the country from today as train drivers refuse to work overtime for six days.

An article on the ITV website says Aslef announced last month that its members will withdraw non-contractual overtime, known as rest-day working, with 16 of the country’s 35 rail operators from Monday, July 3 to Saturday, July 8.

The action could affect visitors to the first week of the Wimbledon tennis tournament.

There are “overwhelming” arguments in favour of delivering high speed rail to the East Midlands and Sheffield, according to a new report.

An article on the New Civil Engineer website says this is the message in Full Speed Ahead: bringing high speed rail to the East Midlands, a report published today by Transport for the East Midlands (TfEM).

The launch event at The Stuart Hotel in Derby in the East Midlands will be attended by business and political leaders. These will include HS2 and rail minister Huw Merriman MP, who will deliver the keynote speech.

The event is being jointly hosted by TfEM which brings together 10 local transport authorities across the East Midlands and Midlands sub national transport body Midlands Connect.

Weekday tube and bus journeys are regularly hitting over 80 per cent of pre-pandemic levels and often exceed 2019 footfall figures on the weekend, according to Transport for London’s chief operating officer Glynn Barton.

An article on City A.M. says the most recent week of TfL tube data shared with City A.M. shows tube trips reached over 80 per cent of 2019 levels on four out of the seven days leading up to 24 June and as high as 91 per cent on Monday 24 June.

Glynn described recent numbers as “hugely positive to both TfL and the wider city as we continue to support and grow the UK economy”.
