Rail Minister Huw Merriman has reassured people in Derby that the city will become the home of the new Great British Railways (GBR) organisation.

An article on the BBC website says the city was named in March as the successful applicant to home GBR, which will run trains across the country and set most fares and timetables.

Huw Merriman denied reports the government had “quietly scrapped” plans for GBR.

He said the government remains “really committed” to the plans.

More than 50 rail stations across the South-East will be converted to Pay As You Go ticketing by the end of the year, the government announced on Tuesday.

An article on the Evening Standard website says this will deliver cheaper and simpler journeys for thousands of London commuters and is hoped will attract more passengers back to the railways.

A total of 53 stations were named in the first tranche – but more than 200 will be converted over the coming years.

Pay As You Go is already available at more than 350 stations inside Greater London and at stations including Reading, Gatwick Airport and Luton Airport Parkway.

Seven years after it should have welcomed passengers, Marsh Barton’s long-awaited new £16 million railway station has been formally opened by the transport secretary. And now, trains have arrived.

An article on the Devon Live website says regular services will call at the station, which serves the city’s largest trading estate, from today (July 4). A new cycle and pedestrian bridge is part of the project.

The station will be served by hourly Great Western Railway services between Paignton and Exmouth, with half-hourly services at peak times. The first service calling at Marsh Barton will be Tuesday’s 5.34am Exeter St David’s to Paignton.

Contractors have been appointed to the rebuild of the fire-damaged Troon station.

Destroyed by fire in July 2021, the rebuild process has reached another vital stage.

Network Rail has appointed AmcoGiffen as the main contractor for the rebuild.
