A new, faster train service between London and Sheffield could be launched in the second half of next year.

An article on The Standard website says Transport company FirstGroup announced its plan to operate two daily return trips from London King’s Cross to the South Yorkshire city via Retford, Worksop and Woodhouse as part of its Hull Trains business.

This would create competition for East Midlands Railway, which runs direct services between London St Pancras and Sheffield, taking around two hours.

FirstGroup said it aims to provide a faster link between the capital and Sheffield than existing services.

Passengers hoping to travel by train in the West Country are being warned to expect delays and cancellations due to flooding caused by heavy rain.

An article on the ITV website says National Rail has said there is “major disruption to Great Western Railway (GWR) services” across the region on Friday 5 January.

The train operator has urged people to check before they travel and said a serious flooding incident happened near Reading on Thursday 4 January.

Talks are due to be held today in a bid to avert the worst week of strike chaos on the Tube for years.

An article on The Standard website says it came as Arsenal warned 60,000 fans due to attend the FA Cup tie with Liverpool, which kicks off at 4.30pm on Sunday, that there would be no Piccadilly line services to get them home.

Transport for London said it would be hosting talks with RMT leaders, though there was little optimism of a last-minute breakthrough.

Siemens Mobility has recruited 35 new employees in the first major wave of recruitment for its state-of-the-art trains manufacturing facility in Goole as it prepares to begin production this Spring.

The first major wave of recruitment will be followed by scores of further roles that will be available over coming months across multiple functions, including mechanical and electrical technicians for train assembly, warehouse and logistics operatives, and quality assurance.

Mark Speed, Site Director and General Manager of Siemens Mobility in Goole, said: “It’s an incredibly exciting time for the project with the recruitment programme moving forward strongly ahead of production starting in 2024.”
