A coroner has warned that Sir Sadiq Khan and Transport for London (TfL) must take action to prevent future deaths after a man was struck by seven Jubilee line trains at an Underground station.

An article on the BBC website says Brian Mitchell, 72, was killed by a train terminating at Stratford on 26 December 2023. The emergency brakes were not applied by any of the four incoming train operators, the inquest into his death heard.

Mitchell had spent almost an hour at the end of the platform before he fell on to the track. He had 272mg of alcohol in his system, more than three times the legal driving limit.

TfL said it was “taking action to prevent incidents like this from happening again”. Sir Sadiq was contacted for comment.”

A major inquiry has been launched into the Channel Tunnel disruption which caused misery for tens of thousands of Eurostar passengers over the New Year period.

An article on The Standard website says Rail Minister Lord Hendy raised concerns that lessons from past disruption may not have been learnt to avoid the type of mayhem seen at the end of December.

He told the Lords: “It is important that there is a full investigation into the three separate incidents which disrupted tens of thousands of passengers’ journeys on 30 and 31 December last and saw some passengers stranded throughout the night, which is clearly unacceptable.

“I am therefore commissioning the relevant authorities—the binational Intergovernmental Commission, the IGC, which oversees the Channel Tunnel, and the Office of Rail and Road—to review last week’s incidents and also the implementation of recommendations from previous reviews of similar incidents, to ensure that urgent lessons are learned for good.”

A global railway systems manufacturer has completed a ÂŁ49m contract involving upgrades between Farncombe in Surrey and Petersfield in Hampshire on the Portsmouth Direct line.

An article on Insider Media says Alstom undertook the works on the more than 150-year-old stretch of railway as part of the Major Signalling Framework Agreement (MSFA) for the Southern Region.

In partnership with Network Rail and its own supply chain, Alstom upgraded eleven level crossing, installed modular remote signalling control and digital interlockings, and replaced track circuits with axle counters to save power and improve safety for maintenance staff.
