Thousands of railway staff worked through the night in difficult conditions and will continue to work today to get lines open in areas affected by Storm Goretti.

Although Network Rail has said much of the network is open and running normally, National Rail is urging everyone planning to travel today to check their full journey.

Very intense heavy snow hit West Midlands/Shropshire and Staffordshire last night, along with high winds in the West Country and Wales. There are also no trains between Sheffield and Manchester until tomorrow.


The mother of a boy killed on a pedestrian railway crossing is calling for urgent safety improvements to “stop others going through” the same.

An article on the BBC website says Harry Basham, 17, was struck by a train in Taunton, Somerset just before 7am on 24 October as he walked to work.

His mum Leanne Golding wants to see changes before her son’s inquest takes place in May, saying “lighting needs to be in place, a traffic light system and gates that lock”.

Network Rail has described what happened as a “tragic accident” and said it will “engage with local authorities, stakeholders and the community on the future of the crossing”.


ScotRail has confirmed it has launched an internal investigation following allegations that some staff were given gifts in exchange for contracts.

An article on the BBC website says Scotland’s nationalised rail operator has allegedly suspended staff members from the property services management team while inquiries take place.

According to a report in the Scotsman, a car may have been one of the gifts accepted.

A ScotRail spokesman confirmed an investigation was being carried out but said he could not divulge any details about it.


Labour mayors in the north of England will meet today as they consider whether to back the government’s plans for Northern Powerhouse Rail.

An article on Yahoo! News says the long-awaited proposal is expected to see tens of billions of pounds of investment announced by the chancellor next week.

But exact details are still being finalised amid last-minute lobbying from regional politicians eager to see more money for rail upgrades allocated to their region.
