Lighting up Network Rail’s new rail stabling yard in Brighton

“Flexible, responsive and, above all, a meticulous eye for detail”. Those are the key skills when it comes to venturing into the rail market according to Trystan Williams, market analyst at the Aluminium Lighting Company (ALC).

The company recently supplied lighting columns to building firm Emico’s construction of Network Rail’s new rail stabling yard in Brighton.

He said: “While one product may be the ideal solution to a problem in street lighting, in the rail sector this solution may be wholly inadequate.

“The rail stabling yard was a project requiring 4m and 5m raise and lower columns that were simple to install and maintain with single-key and one-person operation.

“But they also needed to mitigate against some of the major issues associated with rail electrification and vicinal structures.”

The Aluminium Lighting Company (ALC) is a family business of nearly three decades supplying the Rail, Highways and Private Development Sectors with high-quality aluminium solutions for minor structures.

One of the first companies to introduce extruded to introduce extruded aluminium columns to UK rail and roads, always being at the coal face of the industry, placing major emphasis on innovation, technology and crucially, quality.

Speaking shortly after the work was completed in Brighton, Matt Cunningham, who was then director of engineering for Emico, said: “These are light enough to carry into position. The Raise & Lower mechanism is very simple to operate so we could fit the lanterns quickly and get the columns up with a minimum of fuss.”
