Lumo selected as finalist in prestigious transport awards

Newcastle based innovative train operator, Lumo has been shortlisted for two highly esteemed awards in the transportation sector.

The company’s commitment to enhancing the travel experience for customers has earned it nominations at the National Transport Awards (NTA) for Rail Operator of the Year, and a shortlisting in two categories at this year’s Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) Awards for Excellence.

The National Transport Awards recognise excellence in transport, rewarding innovation and progress for transport initiatives which are working to continually enhance transport networks across England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Lumo will go head-to-head with other UK rail operators who have been shortlisted in the operator of the year category.

Alongside the NTA nomination, the 100% electric rail operator, has also been shortlisted for the Passenger Transport award at the CILT Awards which aim to celebrate excellence across logistics and transport and recognise the most pioneering organisations across the UK. It is shortlisted alongside the Elizabeth Line (Transport for London) and Reading Buses.

The category recognises those achieving outstanding improvements in passenger service, implementing new technology, equipment, or information management, and demonstrating improvements in organisation and human resources alongside championing environmental sensitivity.

Lumo will also have the chance to take home the award for People Development, which applauds organisations who are demonstrating new and innovative approaches to staff development where it is shortlisted alongside global brand BAE Systems and international transport group The Go-Ahead Group.

Since its launch, Lumo has advocated for its employees’ continuous learning and personal development, with 90% of the team undertaking a custom designed apprenticeship, showcasing the company’s commitment to nurturing emerging talent and recognising the career progression of colleagues from their initial roles as Customer Experience Ambassadors to Customer Driver roles.

Commenting on the shortlisting, Lumo’s Managing Director Martijn Gilbert said: “I’m exceptionally proud of our team’s achievements here at Lumo which have now led to us being shortlisted for three prestigious awards and alongside some very big names in the world of transport and logistics.

“Our locally based Newcastle team work tirelessly to provide a friendly, efficient and innovative service onboard our sustainable rail service that’s backed up by our great value fare offers. We’re looking forward to the trip to London, onboard a Lumo train of course, and hopefully bringing some silverware back to the North East!”.

The CILT Awards for Excellence will be held at The Londoner Hotel on 28th September 2023. The National Transport Awards ceremony will be held on 5th October 2023 at Westminster Park Plaza in London.
