Measuring carbon footprint is crucial toward reducing carbon emissions

As the climate change crisis remains a serious threat to human development progress, it requires all stakeholders to be decisive in adopting policies and take bold action to address it. The past and ongoing global challenges in social and economic development have highlighted the importance of promoting a “green recovery”.

Tratos believes that the first step to promoting sustainable development and reducing the burden on the environment is to become aware of the level of emission that a company itself brings into the environment with its products. Indeed, by measuring its carbon emissions, a company starts building a proper understanding of its environmental impact.

A ground-breaker in developing new and greener cable solutions for a range of industries from ports and marine to rail and mass transit, Tratos partnered with AENOR to develop new technology to help companies more than two years ago to measure and manage their carbon footprint.

Tratos has measured all the emissions produced by all its cables during their life cycles to have an overview of the level of emissions produced by the company and to understand how to reduce those emissions. While measuring the impact of its cables, Tratos realised the importance of proximity and location of end-users of the product. Indeed, Tratos’ analysis revealed that transportation could massively increase CO2 emissions; therefore, if a company would like to be sustainable and promote sustainability, certainly, products sold or bought by the company must be as close as possible to the production site.

Despite ongoing and severe global disruptions, 2022 marked another successful year for the advanced technology cable maker Tratos, which continues to deliver the 5-year framework contract with Network Rail for a range of enhanced unarmoured signalling power cables successfully.

This contract marked a significant milestone for Tratos, as Rail is a core sector among its clients. As a company focused on innovation and quality, with a particular strength, as well as a proven track record in the rail sector, getting the Network Rail approval is a highly praised achievement.

In response to the pandemic events, supply chain crisis and high volatility of raw material prices, Tratos Group have put in place specific measures to mitigate the potential disruptions of its operations. Indeed, Tratos has taken steps years in advance to secure its diverse and reliable supply chain. A long time ago, Tratos started increasing energy efficiency in all its sites and offices and reducing carbon emissions. In addition to having used its own water plant energy generation since 1980 and being proud of the fact that in all its processes, the water (thanks to a closed circuit) has always been reused inside the factory constantly, Tratos has recently significantly improved its independent power generation capacity by installing solar panels. Solar energy generation contributes to the supply of about 30% of the total energy used by Tratos Group.
